Aromatherapy is the art and science of using aromatic plant extracts, also known as essential oils to help us lead a natural and healthy balanced life.

It is proven that fragrances can relax or stimulate the brain, which can help with the process of emotional healing.

Aromatherapy is not new, it’s an ancient treatment used successfully throughout the world over centuries. Its popularity is ever-increasing. The science behind aromatherapy involves extracting natural essences from leaves, roots, grasses, fruits and flowers of plants and carefully applying these pure essential oils in ways to assist healing on a physical and emotional level.

Two ways in which Aromatherapy works is through inhalation or as topical application.

Inhalation:The essential oils evaporate into the air using a diffuser container, spray, oil droplets, or breathed in, for example, in a steam bath.

When inhaled, the molecules in the essential oils activate areas in the nose called smell receptors, which send messages through the nervous system to the brain. The oils also activate certain areas of the brain, like the limbic system, which links to emotions, the heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress, and hormone balance. In this way, aromatherapy can have a subtle, yet holistic effect on the body.

Topical Application: Essential oils can also be absorbed by the skin. The molecules in the essential oils are small enough to allow them to penetrate through the skin. The molecules travel through the epidermis (the top layer of skin) reaching the dermis (a deeper layer of skin) and to the blood vessels allowing them to circulate through to all body areas. Massaging the area where the oil is to be applied can boost circulation and increase absorption.

Aromatherapy is usually quite safe, however each oil has its own chemical & therapeutic properties and it is important to know when to use which oil and when to avoid certain oils. So it is a good idea to consult an aromatherapist if you are starting with aromatherapy or if you have specific issues you’d like to address.
